Final Exam in Synoptics I: Puncta Pro Examinatione

Date: October 9 Fri
Venue: Arnoldus Hall
Time:   8:10 am-10:10 am
Duration: Two Hours

Part I: Short Answer = 35 points

Part II: Exegetical Essay = 15 points
For the exegetical essay, prepare to present and comment on a (one only) particular pericope from the  list of passages reported in class. You can also work on your own pericope report. The format should be:
I. Synopsis of the Text or Narrative (this is a summary in your own words)
II. Literary structure and features
III. Comments on some difficult words or phrases
IV. Interpretation
V. Very short personal reflection.

For Part I: Short Answer (Explain and elaborate in specific number of lines).
Several of these questions will be asked from the list below:

1. Why did Jesus prohibit the Twelve in going to the towns of the Gentiles and Samaritans? (Matt 10:5).

2.The meaning of the radicalism in the Matthean version of the sending of the Twelve (Matt 10:9; compare with Mark and Luke).

3. What is the sign of Jonah? (different interpretations).

4. What is a parable? Why does Jesus teach in parables?

5. Who is the sower in the Parable of the Sower? (Matt 13:1-23). Justify your answer. What could be message of this parable?

6. What is the literary genre of narrative of Jesus Walking on the Water (Matt 14:22-33)? What symbolisms does it portray? What are OT texts  that may shed light on this? What Christology (identity of Jesus) does the narrative teach?

7. What is the ecclesiological dimension in the Confession of Peter  (Matt 16:13-20). What are the differing opinions on the meaning of  the "rock"?

8. Why did Jesus rebuke Peter so harshly in the First Passion and Resurrection Prediction (Matt 16:21-23)?

9 .Did Jesus allow divorce? What are the different interpretations of the Matthean exceptive clause (19:9).

10. What is the meaning of "eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven?" (Matt 19:12)?

11.The meaning of "he goes before you in Galilee" in Mark 16:7 and Matt 28:7.

12. The meaning of the apocalyptic scenario at the resurrection of Jesus (Matt 28:2).

13.  The literary structure of the Great Commission (Matt 28:16-20).

14. The meaning of "teaching them to obey everything that I commanded you" (Mat 28:20a).

15. The meaning of "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matt 28:20b).
